  1. I agree that people, including Anna Dello Russo, should definitely be more cautious when it comes to portraying/representing Asian-Americans, especially since they’ve been misrepresented so many times in the media. In addition, it’s striking to see caucasians trying to look Asian because it gives actual Asians and Asian-Americans less and less opportunities to be seen in the industry. However, I also think that we should find out what the motive/inspiration for the shoot is first before we can conclude that it’s targeting/offending Asians.

    • Well, I was led to my assumption that the shoot was targeted at Asians because it was for a Japanese publication. With regard to her motive or inspiration, do you think she’s naive enough to believe that this shoot had absolutely no potential to incite negative publicity and that it would be judged purely on artistic merit? She’s an industry veteran, and should know better than that.

Thanks for your input, by the way Jaron. I love being able to discuss these topics with others.

EDIT: Dude, I just checked out your YouTube! Great job on the covers.

  2. RE: Case of the 2-year-old Chinese girl Hit by Trucks

I am outraged by this incident and totally disgusted by the fact that no passerbys even bothered to stop for this helpless child (except for the lady later on). The judicial system of China is definitely something to question. I personally think that Peng Yu’s case is ridiculous, and I can’t believe that the judges passed such a law against an act that initially was intended to help fellow civilians. I also think that even with this law, the people of China still should have even a bit of care and sympathy for the little girl. Who can we really blame for this? The judicial system? or the people of China?

  4. RE: Unforgettable 2011

There are seriously loads of talent out there that deserve some spotlight, and a lot can be found in the Asian-American community. It’s amazing to see a growing presence of Asian-Americans in the entertainment industry and to have events like Unforgettable and Kollaboration to help acknowledge the fact.

    • Yeah! I attended as a volunteer last year, and the fact that it was well-organized, lux and had guests flying in from across the U.S. showed how a sense of pride and accomplishment is still deeply valued and recognized specifically within the Korean American community.

  5. RE: Occupy Schmoccupy

    Hey Harvey,
This piece was interesting, as it opened up a different outlook on the Occupy movement for me. I’d like to know what your thoughts are on the Occupy protests at the public universities, considering the constant tuition fee hikes, the number of students belonging to families of lower income, minorities, etc.

    • Sorry it took so long to respond Jaron, but if it’s any consolation, this week’s entry actually touches on the occupy-like movements at universities, namely the UC system. While I don’t support OWS or any of its offshoots in a number of cities, my stance on the protests at university campuses is quite different. While I couldn’t appreciate just how fortunate I was to have such generous parents while I finished up my first degree, I was certainly able to empathize with other students under government aid when I was finishing up my second time around. A few years ago, as hopeless as I thought it was, I even participated in a march to the state capitol in protest of student fee increases both as a student and as a reporter for my school’s news outlets. Regardless of what the UC spin doctors are saying, I find it hard to believe that budget cuts are the sole reason for fee and tuition increases, and student protesters on college campuses that are directly affected by these hikes have every reason to be angry. As long as its peaceful, they have my full support. By the way, irrespective of my New Year’s Day rant earlier this week, I hope yours is off to a great start. If you’re protesting at your college campus Jaron, keep fighting the good fight.

  6. In life, there are the “haves” and the “have nots” and these tuition hikes are creating a bigger divide amongst our nation. In the land of the free, to have an education and a better life is part of that dream package that allure so many to come to our country. By making education less affordable, it is only going to hurt our nation in the long run. Too bad that our leaders cannot see what they are doing to our generation.

Regardless if you have financial aid, student loan, parents who pay your tuition, or you pay your own way-these tuition hikes are felt by everyone and is grossly weeding out those who cannot afford school. This will only drastically shift out nations future, in having an even bigger population that is non educated due to the financial discrepancy with tuition fees.
