Indie Gaming: The next big thing? — Calling all Myx gamers!

October 19, 2011 in Uncategorized by Ron

Hey Myx, long time no talk. I’ve been enveloped in research for today’s post: indie gaming communities. Most people don’t realize that they even exist. Well, here’s the breakdown on the newest gaming trends.

Indie gaming is differentiated from typical gaming communities because of how little-known a lot of these games/companies are. They serve the same purpose as most other video games/companies, yet they offer games, in most cases, that are easier-to-produce, accessible to most people, have little hype around them outside of their relatively small fan-bases, and work independently for larger video game publishing companies.

Independent gaming companies like Ludum Dare and PixelxCore Independent Gaming are releasing their own games for computer gamers to purchase or play for free. Many of these games are released on their company’s web sites, or in partnership with online computer gaming portals such as Steam & Big Fish Games. Community forums like indiegames.com also allow users to access these independently released games as well.

The most popular indie game to date is probably the world-wide phenomena known as Angry Birds. And there are others, too! (see: Bit.Runner, Cut the Rope, etc.) Angry Birds has really become quite the fan favorite world-wide, and, to think, it started as just the little touch-screen-game-app-that-could! With it’s incredible success, it seems more people are inclined to want to play these independently released games, and more independent gaming companies are feeling more compelled to create them with hope that these games will become the same thing for them that Angry Birds became for Rovio.

So, Myx gamers, do you participate in any indie video game communities? Do you think the world can handle another Angry Birds-type takeover? Are you an Angry Birds aficionado? Sound off in the comments below!

P.S. Just a minor side-note to this blog post, but, if you Myx users get the chance, make sure to contact me via twitter if you live in the Bay Area. Soon enough I’ll be posting a Retweet contest that will offer the lucky winner two (yes, count ‘em, two!) tickets to attend the Harold & Kumar 3: A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas premiere! Be on the look-out for updates on that very soon. Good luck and happy posting, Myxers! #averyharoldandkumarchristmas
