Competitive by nature, Malaysian born and bred, Anna, believes she has the stamina it takes to achieve her ultimate goal of being an internationally recognized supermodel. With a never-give-up attitude and a gung-ho spirit, Anna sees herself braving all obstacles that are in her way.

And then there was that sports event everyone kept talking about last weekend…what was that? The Super Bowl? And though it’s technically a football game, if you aren’t currently a depressed Pats fan (me) or an elated Giants fan (not me), then it’s really about the ads. And every year there are a couple that are totally awesome (my personal bias is towards the Ferris Bueller one) and a few that are really, really terrible. Not like some of the movie previews shown terrible, like offensive terrible. And by this I mean Pete Koekstra’s anti-Asian Super Bowl ad. It’s bad. It didn’t air nationally, but has been going viral on the interwebz.

And while we’re talking about potentially and/or obviously racist things – any thoughts on whether Disney Channel’s Ravi character on their show Jessie is racist?

Four words: “I love you mom.” Ask any Asian male between the ages of 12-35 if they say that to their mothers regularly. Or ask if they’ve said that in the past five years. Like hipsters occupying Wall Street, 99% of them will say no. I am part of that 99%.

Last week, as I stepped away to use the restroom, my friend grabbed my unattended cellphone and decided to text somebody randomly. That random somebody unfortunately, was my mother. I came back to the table with my friend snickering, cellphone in hand. I knew what happened, but didn’t expect what he wrote.

“I love you, mom!”

My rage face was way past “FUUUUU.” I quickly snatched my phone back and typed furiously to follow up the text. In my mind, I wrote “THAT WAS JUSTIN! NOT ME!” But autocorrect–that little bastard–made it even worse. “THANKS WAY JOKING! NOW ME!” Before I could even respond, she replied, “Is this Chris?”

My mom knows me too well. Thank god.

Bindlestiff Studio was founded in 1989 by Canadian artists Chrystene Ells, Chris Brophy, and a group of local theater artists and for many years flourished as an experimental theater space. In 1997, Allan S. Manalo, artistic director for the Filipino theater company Tongue In A Mood, became Bindlestiff’s artistic director. He transformed the theater into the cultural epicenter for Filipino-American performing arts in the Bay Area that exists today. In 2003, Bindlestiff lost its theater to the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) which acquired its building for a low-cost housing project. In reaction to public outcry for the theater’s preservation, SFRA committed to building the shell of a new 99-seat, black box theater for Bindlestiff in the basement of the newly rebuilt housing complex which is slated to open early 2011.

WHAT’S A BINDLESTIFF?
bin·dle·stiff A hobo, especially one who carries a bedroll. Bindlestiff Studio’s logo of two interlocking rings was a symbol used by Great Depression era tramps traveling the country seeking food and work. The rings let other bindlestiffs know where food and shelter could be found and signified to never give up hope.

The San Diego Asian Film Foundation (SDAFF) just announced its call for entries for the 2012 San Diego Asian Film Festival, the largest showcase of Asian cinema in the Western United States. The 13th annual film festival will play to an estimated audience of more than 20,000 during 9 days of film, live discussions with filmmakers and artists, panels, and exciting special events.

The San Diego Asian Film Festival is seeking competitive entries in the following categories: narrative feature, narrative short, documentary feature, documentary short, and short animation.  An independent jury selects winners in each category, along with the Grand Jury award, which are announced at the Festival’s Gala Awards Night on Saturday, November 3, 2012.  Festival programmers also select a first-time filmmaker to receive the George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award, which is accompanied by a cash prize.

Films/videos submitted must be directed or principally acted by an artist of Asian or Pacific Islander descent; or whose subject matter relates to Asian or Pacific Islander culture.
